Though actually, the same shape is also used in a plain physical way: a disengaged clutch is simply not connected. People borrowed that picture for feelings. Being disengaged is not the same as being shy, tired, or quiet — a quiet student can still care deeply. And it is not “unemployed.” It is about attention and belonging, not about having a job. In careful talk it can sound kinder than “lazy,” because it names a state, not a moral failing; in careless talk it can still sting.
