To discomfit someone is to throw them a little: they feel awkward, , or , as if the ground has shifted. It is an old, rather verb. You meet it in novels and careful writing more than in the street. A sharp question may discomfit a speaker. Though actually, many English speakers mix this up with discomfort, and they are not the same family. Discomfort is about not being comfortable. Discomfit first meant to defeat someone completely in a fight. Later people began using it for that smaller feeling of being put off balance, because the two words look so alike. If you only need “make someone uncomfortable,” or is what most people actually say.

組成From Old French desconfire “to undo, to destroy”: des- (completely) + confire (to make), from Latin com- (together) + facere (to do). The old meaning was to finish someone off. The “embarrass” meaning came later, from confusion with unrelated discomfort.
