A disavowal is the statement or the act of saying you will not own something — you are not responsible, you did not know, or you want no part in it. It is the noun that matches the verb disavow. You hear it in news and law more than at the dinner table: an official disavowal of a , a public disavowal of a group’s views. In daily talk people just say “they said it had nothing to do with them.” The word names the break itself, not the feeling behind it.
