If a look, a voice, a silence, or a comment is disapproving, it shows you think someone or something is bad or wrong — often without a long speech. A disapproving glance across a classroom; a disapproving shake of the head; a disapproving silence at the table. It is the adjective from , and people of all ages use it. It can be gentle (a parent more sad than angry) or sharp (a neighbour who has already judged you). Though actually, a disapproving face is often louder than a disapproving speech: the message is “I am not with you on this,” even when nobody names the rule that was broken.
