Directorial means “about the work of a film or theatre director” — the person who decides how a story is shown: where the camera sits, how the actors play, what the evening feels like. Critics talk about a director’s directorial style, or a directorial debut (the first time they direct). A “directorial choice” is any decision that person made, even a small one, like holding a shot for a long time. The word lives in reviews, film school, and theatre talk. It is fairly formal; friends watching a movie will more often just say “the director.” Though actually, this is not the company director who sits on a board, and it has nothing to do with a telephone directory. Same family of letters, different job.
