A director-general is the person at the very top of a large public organization — a big office that serves the public, not usually a private shop or factory. The BBC has a Director-General. So do many UN agencies, museums, and government bodies in Britain and Europe. In a company you more often say CEO or managing director; director-general is the public-body title. You will see it written with a , or as two capital letters in a job title: Director-General. Though actually, the “general” here is not a soldier. It means “overall, for the whole house,” the same idea as in secretary-general. The job mixes management and public standing: this person sets the line for the whole organization, and their name is the one that appears when something goes right or wrong.
