    If something is directionless, it has no clear way to go and no clear aim. A walk can be directionless: you are not heading for a place; you just wander. More often, though, people are not talking about streets or a compass. They mean a life, a team, a company, or a government that cannot say what it is trying to do. A directionless film does not know what story it wants to tell. A directionless year is one that slips by with no plan. The word is a little more at home in news, essays, and serious talk than in quick chat, but it is not fancy. Though actually, people also hang it on a feeling: a directionless sadness, a mood that sits there with no reason and no next step. It is almost never a compliment.
