An old-fashioned, rather clinical word for a person who has a for alcohol they cannot control — not someone who enjoys a drink, and not a single drunk night. It names the person; the itself was called dipsomania. You will meet it in older novels and newspapers, where it often sounds a bit theatrical. Doctors today almost never write it on a form; they talk about alcohol dependence or alcohol use disorder. The old word can also sound , as if the person were a type of “maniac” rather than someone ill.
