Dingy (say DIN-jee) describes a place or thing that is dark, a bit dirty, and in poor shape — a dingy corridor, dingy curtains, a dingy café with tired light. It is not the same as filthy: more grey, neglected, and unwashed than covered in mud. It is a slightly adjective, still ordinary in writing. Though actually, crash into (the boat), which has an extra h and is usually DING-ee. This dingy comes from a Kentish dialect word for 'dirty.' The origin is not certain; it is probably an old form related to dung (dirt) plus -y 'like,' and a of dungy — that is the usual story, not a sure family tree, so we do not pin other English words to it beyond .
