    A dime is an American coin worth ten cents — one tenth of a dollar. It's small in size but, oddly, smaller than the five-cent "nickel" even though it's worth more. Because it's such a small amount of money, English has expressions built on it: "a dime a dozen" means something is so common it's barely worth anything, and "stop on a dime" means to stop very suddenly and exactly. This word is specific to US (and Canadian) money — students outside North America won't see a real dime, but the expressions still show up in English media.
