To digitize something is to put it into a digital form a computer can store and send — a scan, a file, a stream of numbers — instead of leaving it on paper, film, or an old tape. You digitize a photo by scanning it; a library might digitize newspapers so people can read them online. British spelling is often digitise. It is a neutral, slightly technical verb, common at work and in school. People stretch it, too: “digitize the business” can mean move the whole thing onto computers, not just scan one document.
