Dieppe is a port town on the north coast of France, on the English Channel — the sea that sits between France and England. It is not a huge capital; it is a harbour people know because boats still carry people and cars between Dieppe and Newhaven, a port on the English side. When someone in English says they are going to Dieppe, they almost always mean this French town. The name is old: English once had Depe, from Middle French Diepe, and the way we say it now was later reshaped to follow modern French Dieppe. There is another Dieppe in New Brunswick, Canada. That town was named later, in memory of Canadian soldiers who died in the Dieppe Raid of 1942, a hard attack on the French port in the Second World War. So the Canadian name is a memorial; the older place is the French harbour.
