A diehard is a person who will not change, even when almost everyone else already has. They hold on to an old idea, an old party, an old way of doing things — and they hold on as if letting go would be a kind of death. The picture in the word is not “dying”; it is the old saying that someone can die hard, meaning they fight to the last and do not give in. In and in arguments about “how things used to be,” diehard often sounds a little critical: this person is blocking the new. Though actually, people also use it with warmth. A diehard fan of a singer or a football club is not usually angry at change; they just will not stop loving that one thing. You can call someone a diehard, or put it in front of another noun: a diehard conservative, a diehard supporter. It is informal, everyday English, not a science word. As a verb phrase, die hard stays two words: people still say old habits die hard.
組成Deverbal from the phrase die hard, “to fight to the end, not give up easily.” Both the noun (a diehard) and the adjective (diehard fans) come from that phrase.
