Dieback is a plant problem, not a person dying. On a tree or bush, the tips of the twigs die first; then the dead part creeps back down the branch toward the trunk. That is why English says the plant dies back. A whole plant can be lost if it keeps going, but sometimes only the ends go and the rest lives. and forest people use the word. Dry weather, frost, fungus, or insects can start it. It is not the same as leaves falling in autumn, which is normal. The related verb is die back: The roses died back after the freeze. As a noun, dieback names the condition, and people also point to the dead ends as the dieback they will cut off.
