    If someone diddles you, they get money from you by a trick — not by grabbing your bag, but by cheating. It is informal. British speakers use this sense a lot: He diddled me out of twenty pounds. Americans may say it too, but they also use diddle for other, ruder things, so treat this money-cheat sense as casual talk, not for a job letter or an exam essay. It is milder and smaller-sounding than rob, and less official than words lawyers use for fraud. You can diddle someone, or diddle them out of a sum. It often has a slightly old, flavour, as if the cheat were cheeky rather than violent — though the person who lost the money will not find it funny.

組成From old dialect words for tricking someone, and also for tottering or shaking; writers also connect it to older English for deceive. The path is not tidy, so that is as far as we can honestly go.
