Dibs is a playful claim: the right to have, use, or do something first, because you said so in time. A child shouts “Dibs on the front seat!” and, if the others accept the game, the seat is theirs. Adults still use it among friends — the last , the good desk, who chooses the film. It is very informal, mostly American, and it does not belong in a serious letter or a contract. You call dibs, have dibs on something, or just shout dibs. Though actually, it is not a real law. It only works when the group plays along. Nobody is quite sure where the word came from. People most often point to dibstones, little counters in an old children’s game. Other guesses are dib, “to tap,” a northern English dip meaning a small hollow in the ground, or a short form of divide. Scholars do not agree, so that is all we can honestly say.
