Diametrically means completely different and opposite — as far apart as two things can be. You almost always meet it in a set phrase: diametrically opposed, or diametrically opposite. Two ideas, two plans, two stories sit at opposite extremes and cannot both be right in the same way. It is a formal, slightly word; in ordinary talk people just say completely opposite or the total opposite. Though actually, the picture underneath is a circle: the diameter joins two points on opposite sides, so this adverb came to mean “at the opposite extreme,” not “very” and not “exactly.” If two friends only disagree a little, the word is too strong.
組成From diametrical + -ly. Diametrical comes from diameter: Greek diá “across” + métron “measure.”
