Something diamanté is decorated with tiny shiny stones that look like diamonds but are not real. You see it on dresses, shoes, bags, hair clips, and jewellery — sparkle sewn or glued on so the thing catches the light. The stones are glass or plastic, cut to glitter. The word came in from French, so it still feels a little fashion-shop and a little fancy: you meet it on labels and in magazines more than at the dinner table. Though actually, people also use it as a noun for the stones themselves — a belt covered in diamanté. In American shops the everyday word is often rhinestone; in British English diamanté is quite at home. It never means a real diamond. If the stones were real, you would just say diamond.
