Dialysis is a medical treatment that takes harmful waste and extra water out of someone’s blood when the kidneys cannot do that job. A special machine (or sometimes fluid in the belly) does the cleaning and the blood goes back into the body. A person may need it several times a week; it can keep someone alive for a long time, though it is not the same as a new kidney. Though actually, in a science class the same word can mean any process of separating things through a thin skin (a membrane). The hospital meaning is the one you will hear in ordinary life.
