A diadem is a circle of gold or jewels that a queen, princess, or other royal person wears on the head. It sits on the hair like a band, not like a tall, heavy crown with points or arches. You meet it in history, fairy stories, museums, and rather formal or old-fashioned writing — not in talk about a plastic party crown. Though actually, writers also stretch it: a “diadem of light” on a mountain is just sunlight sitting there like a prize. There is a rare verb, to diadem someone, meaning to put that band on them, to crown them; almost nobody uses it in ordinary speech.

組成From Greek diádēma, a band bound around the head, from dia- “around” and a verb meaning “to bind.” It came through Latin and Old French into English.
