A dhoti is a long piece of cloth that some Hindu men, especially in India, wrap around the waist and then pass between the legs. It is not sewn like trousers, and it is not a skirt: the wrapping is the clothing. You still see it at temples, at weddings, in villages, and on holy men. In cities many men wear trousers for work instead. English borrowed the word as it was; it is not a fashion word you use for jeans or shorts.
