DfID (also written DFID) is the short name of the Department for International Development, a British government office that used to handle overseas aid — money, health, schools, and development work in poorer countries. People said DfID the way Americans say USAID: it was the aid department, not the Foreign Office. In 2020 the British government closed DfID as a separate department and folded its work into a new one, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). So in older news and reports DfID is current; in today's official British government it is a name from the recent past. You still meet it constantly in articles about aid, because that is the name the work carried for about twenty years (1997–2020).
