1. 1

DFC stands for Distinguished Flying Cross. It is a British medal for bravery in the air, given to officers of the RAF — the Royal Air Force — and later also to officers of other British and Commonwealth air forces. It is not a medal for just doing the job well; it marks courage in flying, often in war. Other ranks used to receive a different medal, the DFM (Distinguished Flying Medal), so the DFC sat on the officer side of that old split. The United States has its own medal with the same English name; that is a different award, from a different country. In British writing, DFC after a name (for example, Squadron Leader Smith DFC) tells you the person received this medal. You will meet it in war history, , and military lists, not in everyday chat.
