Devon is a county in the southwest of England, known for green countryside and for holidays. It holds the high, wild land of Dartmoor and part of National Park, and many visitors come for the coast as well as the moors. Two products are especially tied to it: very thick cream (the cream you put on with jam — a cream tea) and cider, the alcoholic drink made from apples. Exeter is the county town; Plymouth is a large city on the sea. You say it DEV-un, not de-VON. Though actually older writing often says Devonshire, and you still meet that in “Devonshire cream.” There is also a stretch of Earth history called the Devonian, named because rocks of that age were studied in Devon. Write it with a capital D: it is a place, not a common noun.
