A reckless attitude: you know there might be trouble, and you go ahead anyway, almost with a grin. People say a devil-may-care smile, a devil-may-care driver, a devil-may-care attitude. It is a little old-fashioned and a little storybook, but newspapers and novels still like it. It does not mean you worship the devil. It comes from an old shrug: the devil may care — I don’t. Depending on the speaker, it can sound slightly (brave, free) or slightly warning (you are not taking this seriously enough).
