The process of something slowly getting worse - it could be your health, a building, a relationship, or a situation. Doctors talk about the "deterioration" of a patient's condition; engineers talk about the "deterioration" of a bridge over time. It's a fairly formal, serious word, often used when something used to be fine and is now getting steadily worse.
