Desultorily means in a desultory way: without a plan, and often without much care. You might leaf desultorily through a magazine, or chat desultorily while waiting — a bit here, a bit there, never really settling. It is a formal, adverb; most people would just say “with no real plan” or “in a half-hearted way”. Same idea as desultory, but it tells you how the action is done.
