A desperado is a violent criminal who is not afraid of danger — the kind of person who will take wild risks because they seem to have nothing left to lose. English first used it, with a lot of colour, for outlaws in the old American West: cowboy films, a gun, a horse, no plan to live a quiet life. People still use it that way. They also stretch it, sometimes with a half-smile, for anyone acting in a reckless, last-chance way, though that stretch is looser than the old film sense. It names a person, not a feeling. Police and news will more often say suspect, gunman, or ; desperado is vivid and a little old-fashioned. Though actually, it sits right next to desperate: both grew from the idea of having no hope, but they walked into English through different doors. A desperate person is in a hopeless spot; a desperado is the outlaw picture of that idea.
組成From old Spanish desperado, from a verb meaning “to despair,” from Latin dis- (away) + sperare (to hope). A doublet of desperate: same Latin family, a different path into English.
