If someone is desolated, they have been made to feel very sad and lonely — emptied out inside, as if the people or hopes that filled them are gone. It is much stronger than sad. You might be desolated by a death, by a leaving, or by news that takes the floor out from under you. English often uses the -ed form after was or were: she was desolated. The verb can also take an object: the news desolated them. Though actually, the same word-family also describes empty land — a desolate place, with almost nobody there — so the feeling in a person and the emptiness of a landscape sit next to each other. Here we mean the feeling. The voice is fairly strong and a little old-fashioned; in chat, people more often say heartbroken or gutted.
