"Desi" is an informal word used mostly by South Asians themselves (from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and nearby countries) and their communities abroad, to describe people, food, culture, or style that feels authentically South Asian - like "desi food" (traditional South Asian home cooking) or a "desi wedding" (a wedding with South Asian traditions). It comes from a Hindi/ word and carries a feeling of pride and belonging, similar to how someone might proudly call something "homegrown".
