Desertification is the slow change of useful land, especially , into desert — dry ground that is hard to grow food on. It is not one storm of sand. It is years of too little rain, too many animals eating the plants, too many trees cut, or farming that kills the soil, until the land cannot hold water. Geography, climate news, and official reports use this formal noun. Though actually, the land may not look like a desert; some plants may remain, just not enough to live from. The worry is that people can no longer farm there.
