Desegregation is the ending of a system that keeps people of different apart — or the long process of ending it. You will meet it in history: school desegregation, the desegregation of buses and restaurants. It names a policy and a struggle, not a single afternoon. Formal. Though actually, writers sometimes argue that sharing the same building is not yet fairness; the word itself only says the colour line in the rules has been taken down.
