A descant is a second tune, usually higher, that is sung or played on top of the main tune. In church and in school choirs, most people sing the hymn, and a few high voices add a descant that floats above it. It is not just singing high, and it is not any harmony — it is that extra melody sitting over the main one. You meet it in music class and in hymn books more than in pop songs. There is a rarer old verb, to descant on something, meaning to talk on and on; that belongs to books. This entry is the music sense.
