A dervish belongs to a Muslim religious group — often a Sufi group — whose members live simply and spend their lives close to God. The picture most English speakers carry is the whirling dervish: a man in a tall hat and a wide white skirt who spins and spins as a kind of prayer. Though actually, that spinning belongs to one well-known group; not every dervish dances. People also stretch the word in a looser, slightly old-fashioned way: to work or whirl like a dervish means to move with wild, spinning energy, and it does not mean the person is Muslim or holy. The first sense is the real one; the second is a colour English borrowed from the dance.
