Derring-do is a playful, old-fashioned name for very brave acts — the kind you get in adventure stories, with swords, daring rescues, and heroes who leap before they look. People almost always use it with a smile. You would not use it about a in a serious news report; you would use it about a film, a comic, or a friend who is showing off a little. The strange spelling is part of the joke: it looks like old story-English on purpose. It started as daring to do, and a poet long ago read those words the wrong way, as a noun, and the noun stuck. Though actually, it is not the word for quiet daily bravery, like telling the truth. It leans toward , storybook courage.
