1. 1

A derrick is a tall metal framework or crane used to lift heavy things - most often seen over an oil well, holding the drilling equipment, or used at building sites and ports to lift heavy loads. Interestingly, this common noun actually comes from a person's name: a famous English executioner in the 1600s was called Derrick, and his execution device had a similar tall, angled shape. Because of that history, "Derrick" is also used today as a person's first name, separate from the machine.
