A derogatory remark, joke, name, or look puts a person or a group down. It shows you do not respect them, and it often insults. It is not just a bit negative — it has a sting. Teachers and news writers like the word because they can mark speech as insulting without repeating the insult. It is a grown-up word, but not a lawyer-only word. In American talk about money you may also see derogatory marks on a credit report. That does not mean someone insulted you — it means late payments and other bad records that hurt your name. Same idea, stretched into banking. Though actually, we usually call the comment derogatory, not the person: a derogatory remark, not really a derogatory man.
