Dentures are false teeth you can take in and out — a set made to stand in for teeth you no longer have. People almost always say dentures with the s, even when they mean one plate that sits in one jaw; dentists may say a denture for a single piece. A full set replaces all the teeth in a jaw; a partial denture fills a gap and clips onto the teeth that are still there. They are not braces, which move real teeth, and they are not implants, which are fixed into the bone and do not come out at night. Everyday English also calls them false teeth; dentures is the ordinary careful word, a little more grown-up, not fancy. Older people wear them more often, though actually a young person can need them too after an accident or after gum disease.
