1. 1

A dent is a small dip or hollow pushed into a hard surface, usually by something hitting it — 'a dent in the car door' from a small crash. As a verb, to dent something means to make this small hollow — 'he dented the fridge moving it.' 'Dent' is also used for feelings or reputation: 'the loss put a dent in the team's confidence' means it hurt or reduced their confidence a little, without destroying it completely.
