Science writers, teachers, and people who explain money or computers do this: they show the thing is not magic, just steps you can follow. The word is fairly formal and a little long; in class you more often hear “let me make this simple.” Though actually, it does not mean killing wonder. It means replacing fog with a picture you can hold.
