Demotic describes language, art, or style that belongs to ordinary people, not to specialists or the palace. A demotic way of speaking is the way most people actually talk. Writers use it as a rather word: this is for everyone, not just for scholars. You will not hear it much in a shop; it lives in essays, history, and talk about language. It does not mean “cheap” or “low quality” — it means “of the people.” Though actually, with a capital D it is also the name of an old Egyptian writing system, and of everyday modern Greek as opposed to the old formal kind — same idea: the people’s form.
