A demographer is a person who studies human populations and the ways they change: how many births, marriages, and deaths happen in a place at a certain time, how many people move in or out, and what that does to the size and shape of a group. They work with numbers, surveys, and maps, and they look for patterns — why one city is getting older, why another has many young families. Governments use their work to plan schools, hospitals, and roads; companies use it to guess who their customers will be. Though actually, the job is not just counting heads once. It is about change over time, and about what the numbers mean for real lives. It is a specialist, academic word. In ordinary talk people may just say “population expert.”
