    To demagnetize something is to take away its magnetic pull — the power to stick to iron or to hold a magnetic pattern. The object is still there; it is just no longer a magnet, or its magnetic strip no longer works. People demagnetize old tapes, tools, and credit-card strips (a strong magnet in a bag can do it by accident). In British spelling you will also see demagnetise. The everyday Taiwan experience is a card that suddenly cannot be read: that strip has lost its magnetic pattern.
