In British informal English, Delia can mean the celebrity cook Delia Smith, often just by her first name, the way fans talk about a famous person they feel they know. People say a Delia recipe, Delia's Christmas food, or “Do it the way Delia does” when they mean her trusted, careful home-cooking style. She became a household name on British television, so the bare name is enough — if you are in that world. Though actually, outside Britain many English speakers will not know who you mean, and Delia is also an ordinary woman's name with nothing cook-like about it. This sense is a nickname for one person, not a general word for a chef.
組成As a given name, Delia comes from Ancient Greek Dēlíā, a name for the goddess Artemis, because she was said to have been born on the island of Delos. The cooking sense is just this famous woman's first name used on its own.
