    A deli is a : a shop, or a counter, that sells cooked meats, cheeses, salads, sandwiches, and other ready-to-eat savoury food. The short form is informal and very common in American English; British speakers use it too, though the longer word still turns up. You go to the deli, order at the deli, pick up something from the deli. People also stretch it a little and talk about deli food or a deli sandwich — food in that style, even if you are not standing in the shop. It is a place-word first, not a fancy way to say delicious.
