If someone is defiant, they are clearly refusing to do what they have been told — and they let you see it. The refusal is on the face, in the voice, in the way they stand. A defiant child will not sit down. A defiant worker will keep protesting after the warning. The word often suggests a little heat or pride: not just disagreement, but a challenge. It is an adjective (a defiant look, a defiant speech). The matching noun is defiance. You can use defiant of people and of acts. It is stronger than stubborn: stubborn may only mean you will not change; defiant means you are pushing back against someone’s authority. In news and stories it is common; in soft everyday talk people may just say they wouldn’t listen.
