To defame someone is to write or say bad or things about them so that other people will have a worse opinion of them. It is the doing-word at the centre of this family; defamation is the act, and defamatory describes the words. Newspapers, lawyers, and careful speakers use defame. In casual talk people more often say badmouth, smear, or talk trash about. Defame is stronger and more formal. You defame a person, or sometimes a company — not a wall or a picture. Spoiling how a thing looks is , a different word that only sounds close.

組成From Middle English defamen, from Anglo-Norman defamer (verb) and defame (noun), from Latin diffāmō, from fāma (fame, rumour, reputation). The old prefix is the away/apart piece: take the reputation off someone.
