A deerstalker is a soft hat with a brim at the front and another at the back, and pieces of cloth that can come down over the ears. English speakers picture Sherlock Holmes in one. Though actually the stories barely dress him that way — drawings and films did that work, and the hat stuck. The name is honest about the original use: people who stalk deer, creeping close in cold country, wore it because the two brims and the ear-flaps keep weather off. Today almost nobody buys one to hunt. It is a costume hat, a period hat, or a knowing joke. In ordinary talk a deerstalker is the hat, not the hunter.
