A deckhand is a worker on a ship who does the ordinary jobs on deck: washing, painting, tying ropes, helping with cargo, and small repairs. They are not the captain or the officers. On a small boat the deckhand may do almost everything; on a big ship they are one of many. It is port-and-ship English, practical rather than fancy.
