Deceleration is the slowing-down itself — the act, or how much the speed is falling. In a car you feel deceleration when you brake. In a physics class it is the name for speed dropping. News and business writing like it too: a deceleration in growth means things are still growing, just more slowly. The everyday phrase is slowing down; deceleration sounds a bit technical, which is why engineers and reach for it.
